Sri Lanka's extremist Buddhist movement Bodu Bala Sena has decided to continue agitations against Halal certificate until the government expresses its official stance on the Halal certification.
The secretary of Bodu Bala Sena, Buddhist monk Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero says that only the government can issue certificates on quality of food and no religious organization can issue such certificates.
The Thero urged the government to announce its stance on the Halal issue immediately.
Bodu Bala sena has lobbied with a number of government Ministers regarding the Halal certification. It held discussions with the Prime Minister also last week.
In a move to diffuse growing tensions, All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), the apex Muslim body, which issues the Halal certificate, urged the Sri Lankan businesses to sell the Halal products only to Muslims.
The ACJU says the Halal certificate has not been forced to any product and it is obtained voluntarily by the producers.
